Students discuss rezoning

By Corina Curry

Residents will have a chance to voice their opinions on a possible rezoning of the College-John Street-Augusta area from a student-populated district to a single or two-family dwelling district.

A neighborhood meeting is scheduled today at 7:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 615 N. First Street.

A letter from City Planner James Hogue states the meeting is “strictly for discussion purposes…to see if there is any interest in pursuing this option or other options concerning this neighborhood.”

Various representatives of the DeKalb city staff code enforcement, economic development, and police departments will attend the meeting to suggest and discuss the condition and fate of the area.

Bessie Chronopolous, DeKalb 5th ward alderman, said, “It has been a challenge to represent that area. Over the years, there have been numerous nuisance complaints and building code violations. Down-zoning the area is only one way that might solve the problems.”
