The reported Aug. 29 sexual assault of an NIU student was unfounded, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Police said Friday.

“After extensive interviews and investigation, it has been determined that the reported crime was unfounded,” police said.

The police and DeKalb County State’s Attorney Mike Coghlan will be evaluating the police reports to determine if the complainant will be charged with filing a false report, police said.

“It’s inappropriate for me to comment because I have a pending investigation,” Coghlan said.

DeKalb County Sherrif’s Police Capt. Jim Laben also refused comment.
