Mix-up interrupts group fundraiser

A misunderstanding interrupted a student fundraiser Monday when University Police shut the function down for about 40 minutes.

Students from the Public Relations Student Service Association holding a booth outside DuSable Hall were told the street was city property and they had to shut down, said Jennifer Smith, an American Credit Card Corporation representative who is working with the PRSSA.

The UPs called the University Programming & Activities office where they were told that PRSSA didn’t have the proper paperwork to be holding the fundraiser, which Smith denied.

“Evidently everything was taken care of two weeks ago and we had the proper paperwork to hold it outside. After some of our representatives went to talk with them, they found the paperwork but said that we couldn’t have a booth set up out in the street, unless we fill out a permit with city hall. The story kept changing,” she said.

Flecia Thomas, Programming and Activities associate director, said the problem was a simple misunderstanding.

“The organization never was approved to have a table outside, they were reserved to be in the DuSable entry. We never reserve areas on the street, it’s not our policy,” she said.
