More student positions need to be filled on the University Council, said a Student Advisory Committee representative.

Steve Cohen told the University Council during its Wednesday meeting three more students need to be appointed before the SA committees can make their appointments. Seven positions are filled by the UC and seven by the SA.

“Unless appointments are made soon, it might not be until November when there will be a full student body representation on the council,” Cohen said.

In other business, NIU President John La Tourette thanked everyone for their cooperation with the temporary relocation of the University Health Services while asbestos was being removed from the old building.

He also announced the Illinois Board of Higher Education approved a facility to be built in Rockford.

“It gave a very strong affirmation of the role of NIU as the major university of northern Illinois,” La Tourette said.

Most requests presented during the meeting were approved. Among them were:

‘Increasing the University Honors Committee from seven to nine members.

‘Keeping Mark Brown on for a second term as a representative on The Northern Star Advisory Board.

‘Include new developments in the Committee’s book description of the Radiation Safety Committee.

There was uncertainty over a proposal to delete the College of Continuing Education Advisory Committee from the Committees of the University.

NIU Provost Kendall Baker will consult with the Faculty Senate about what role the college should have, said UC Executive Secretary J. Carroll Moody.

The proposal “might come back (to the UC) for discussion,” he said.

Moody also announced the Constitution and Bylaws would be coming out with a new edition sometime in October. It will include new amendments made since it was revised in 1988.

“The first meeting went very well. However, We expect to cover more serious topics in coming months,” La Tourette said.
