Students want more campus services during summer term

Some summer school students said they enjoy NIU’s slower summer pace, but want more of the services available in the school year to run during the summer.

Many students said it is a hassle that the Huskie bus service does not run in summer.

“It’s a pain not having buses,” junior business major Brian Korbel said.

And many students said NIU’s lack of parking spaces makes the situation worse.

Karen Asen, a senior studying sociology, said the shut down of the bus service makes it difficult for students without cars to get around town.

These students are dependent on other people with cars to run errands or go anywhere away from campus, Asen said.

Nirupa Sriramulu, an international graduate student, agreed with the other students’ responses to the transportation problem.

On Aug. 1 students can vote on a referendum that would provide summertime Huskie bus service in 1991.

Students also said they want the stores that routinely close during the summer to stay open.

Students said they do not want convenience stores near campus like White Hen and Kampus Korner to close for the season.

Sriramulu said though the campus is more relaxed at times she is bored.

The Campus Activity Board should show more movies, she said.

On a more positive note, students said smaller classes and fewer students on campus make life less stressful.

Some students said they are able to focus their attention more on their classes because they take fewer of them in the summer.

Most students said they would not take summer school again, unless they were forced to in order to graduate on time.
