Students’ input sought at Furniture Fair

Students came, saw and gave their opinions on possible residence hall furniture showed at a fair Wednesday in Lincoln Hall.

Getting input on how eight rooms in Lincoln and Douglas halls will be remodeled this summer, the Furniture Fair showed furniture from 15 different companies. Samples ranged from bunk beds to movable closets and students were asked for their first and second choice company and why they picked those companies.

Student input will be used before any decision is made, said Sheryl Mullis, Lincoln and Douglas hall area coordinator.

NIU freshman Sharon Bullog, a general math major, said she saw “a lot of new stuff.” She said the furniture in the residence halls is “primitive” and the furniture at the fair looks “more comfortable” and gives students “more room.”

Gerald Marrero, a freshman pre-business major, said his favorite pieces of furniture on display were the desks.

Furniture company representatives were taken through rooms at Lincoln Hall earlier in the afternoon.

Pat Walton, Sales Design Consultant for Brill Manufacturing, said he thought the rooms were like a “prison.” He said “the rooms may have worked 30 years ago, but they need more creativity now.”

Students also were able to fill out an entry form which will give them a chance to live in one of the remodeled rooms.

Student Housing Assistant Director Linda Tillis said the money to remodel the rooms will come from the students’ room and board fees. Preliminary remodeling estimates show one room will cost about $2,500 to $5,000.

However, Mullis said the cost could not be definitely determined until the furniture is picked out.
