OLAS backs McCormack

The Organization of Latin American Students announced its endorsements for the Student Association election.

OLAS President Jorge Sonserca said the organization endorses Robert McCormack for SA president, Michael Holy for SA vice president and Tanya Smith for SA treasurer.

About 40 OLAS members voted to support these candidates, Sonserca said. The vote was nearly unanimous, he said.

Sonserca said McCormack “works with a lot of organizations” and he is concerned about campus issues. OLAS members like McCormack’s ideas, he said.

OLAS Vice President Robert Cordero said members support Smith because she has the most experience and is concerned with the students needs.

Cordero said he likes Smith’s comment about making the SA pro-active instead of reactive because he thinks the SA needs this type of attitude.

Holy “has great ideas,” Sonserca said. He said Holy’s idea to have workshops for all organization treasurers is good because many are disorganized and it would give them “a chance to get back on their feet.”

Sonserca said he was disappointed that some of the candidates did not show up for their scheduled time to speak. He said that is an irresponsible move on their part and shows a lack of concern for students and organizations.

Cordero said he expects at least 30 to 40 voters to cast their vote for the endorsed candidates. He said this is a big enough number to “swing” the election.
