Three local politicians and an NIU official will be spinning records Saturday to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Mayor Greg Sparrow, along with DeKalb County Clerk Terry Desmond, State Rep. John Countryman, R-DeKalb and Eddie Williams, NIU vice president of finance and planning, will participate in the WLBK/WDEK “radiothon.”

“I’ve never been a DJ before,” Sparrow said. He said he has volunteered his time at the radiothon for years, but after a brief experiment on the air last year, he was asked to return as a DJ.

The Bill Hingston Pioneer Club also is participating. “We are a community service group,” said Club President Sue Rosicki. “This is the first year we’ve been in the radiothon.”

Rosicki said her group, mostly telecommunications employees, will send about nine volunteers to answer phones at the radiothon.

WLBK/WDEK Sales Manager Ken Husky said, “here you have an opportunity to make a contribution to the American Cancer Society and get something in return.”

Husky said the celebrity DJs and the phone volunteers will work two-hour shifts. The DJs will auction several items donated from local merchants, clubs and individuals as phone volunteers collect bids, he said.

Husky said the goal of the radiothon is to raise $30,000 by 6:15 p.m. The program begins at 6 a.m. on WLBK-AM and will be simulcast on WDEK-FM at 1 p.m.

Nancy Vidlak, DeKalb County American Cancer Society co-chairman, said the radiothon began about 17 years ago when the society got together with radio management to develop an fundraiser for cancer treatment and research.

Larry Kaye Gray, Sycamore Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors manager said the group trys to represent the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce and the Sycamore community in good causes.

“The purpose of the organization is to be a support group for the Chamber of Commerce,” Kaye said, adding this is a good cause and the Ambassadors will send eight volunteers for two-hour shifts answering phones.
