NIU’s Film Library services to be moved from Altgeld to FML

Part of NIU’s Film Library services will be moved from Altgeld Hall to the Founders Memorial Library this week.

Chuck Crumbacher, business manager of Founders Memorial Library, said “there are other departments in Altgeld Hall that want to expand to our area.”

He also said it was better to condense all library services in one building.

Founders Assistant Director Elizabeth Titus said NIU’s film library has over 5,000 16-milimeter films and over 1,000 videotapes used in teaching courses.

Michael Gabriel, Microforms and Media associate professor, said the videocassette recorders and projectors for viewing the films will remain at Altgeld Hall for the time being.

Plans to move to Founders were discussed for many years, said Crumbacher, but money was not available until this year.

Build Illinois funds are being used for the move this week, Crumbacher said. Most of the money is being spent to remodel the new offices at Founders to accommodate all of the specialized equipment used in the department, he said.

Crumbacher said the move is a “kind of two-stage type of process,” as he explained some parts of the film library will remain in Altgeld Hall, while other services will be available at Founders.

Gabriel said film pick-ups and film previewing services will remain at Altgeld Hall but scheduling to pick up films will be done at FML.

Gabriel said, “We don’t know yet because the remodeling isn’t completed,” when asked when the move would be finished.
