‘Hip on Hollywood’ theme of Greek Week

NIU greeks will have a week of activities in celebration of Greek Week 1990 from Saturday through Friday.

Linda Carroll, co-chairwoman of Greek Week, said the theme of Greek Week, is “Hip on Hollywood.”

“The events aren’t specifically geared toward a certain house. It’s the kind of thing everyone can get involved in,” Carroll said.

Saturday will feature a surprise event. Greek Sing will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom. Carroll said Greek Sing is a series of skits or musical acts by sororities and fraternities that go along with the “Hip on Hollywood” theme.

Carroll said a faculty reception will be held on Monday. The purposes of the reception are to invite faculty to meet greeks and to appreciate faculty advisers, she said.

Tuesday’s event features Craig Kargas, a mentalist who claims to have psychic powers.

Greek Affairs Adviser Mary Ronan said as part of the Greek Lecture Series, Dave Westol, executive director of Theta Chi fraternity, will present “Hazing on Trial” Wednesday. Ronan said Westol will hold a mock trial of a hazing incident using members of the audience.

Carroll said the Outstanding Greek Awards, as well as novelty awards, will be presented at an all-greek social Friday night. “A Night at the Oscars” will be a non-alcoholic mixer.

Fraternity and sorority houses will host dinner exchanges between members of the chapters.

Barry Moscowitz, co-chairman of Greek Week, said this “is a kind of week to put differences aside. The basic thing is unity.” Another goal is “to expose the rest of the campus to greek life,” he said.

IFC President Rob Martin said the purpose of the week is “a complete unity of the entire Greek Row, men and women. Everyone puts competition aside for the purpose of unity.”
