Veto worries NIU students

By Mark Gates

Chinese students at NIU are concerned about President Bush’s veto of a bill allowing Chinese students with visas to remain here and escape possible persecution in their homeland.

Serena Moy, though born in America, said she has relatives in China and is concerned about the situation in there. Moy said she thought the Chinese government has tried to keep all of the Chinese in China as a result of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

The Chinese government is probably afraid that too many democractic ideals have gotten into China, she said.

The Senate narrowly failed to override Bush’s veto this week.

Cheng-Pei Chen, whose family lives in China, said he will go back after he graduates. He said Chinese students in America could face punishment in China if they are deemed “good or bad” by Chinese government policy.

Jie Chen, who was born in the United States, said she reads Chinese newspapers for news about China. Chen said the Chinese government would probably send students to prison suspected of anti-Communist activities.
