Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Chi, Sigma Pi statuses upgraded

Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Chi and Sigma Pi fraternities have been moved to different statuses after being reviewed by the university.

Lambda Chi Alpha was on suspension spring semester 1989 for an alleged sexual assault on Dec. 2, 1988. The fraternity changed to probation status last semester and will continue on probation this semester.

Lambda Chi Alpha President John O’Brien said the fraternity basically has all of its rights back. “It’s a working relationship with the university. We have to do a few more workshops. We’re working with the university in a learning process,” O’Brien said.

“It’s kind of beneficial. It’s a constant reminder not to go back to past ways,” he said.

After being on suspension spring semester 1989 and deferred suspension during fall semester 1989 for a racial skit on Nov. 20, 1988, Sigma Chi has returned to full fraternity status.

Sigma Chi fraternity President Kevin Meadows said the suspension was lifted last week. “Everybody’s happy. The hard work has finally paid off. We will still continue to do our programming with cultural awareness. We were serious about what we were doing,” he said.

Sigma Pi was on suspension last semester for serving alcohol to minors and failing to provide non-alcoholic bevages during the social event on April 29, 1989.

Sigma Pi President Mike Russo said the fraternity was moved from suspension to deferred suspension on Dec. 23. The fraternity will be allowed to participate in Rush and a pledge program.

The fraternity held a retreat on Sunday with their national chapter to find out problems and come up with solutions, he said.

“We’re really ready for this. Retreat changed everyone’s attitudes. A lot of guys are excited about it,” he said.

“If there are no violations to the sanctions and if we meet the sanctions, the (deferred) suspension will be lifted after this semester,” Russo said.

Mark Kocol, chief justice of the InterFraternity Council Judicial Board, said the course of a fraternity’s status is determined “by the severity of the original case.”
