Wes Craven’s “Shocker,” a horror movie with a plot

By Gina Quilici

I purchased my ticket for the movie “Shocker” with a heavy sense of dread. I wasn’t in the mood for another mindless horror flick loaded with guts and gore.

After the film had ended I sat and comtemplated what I had just viewed on the screen and guess what? I liked “Shocker.” No, better yet, I really enjoyed “Shocker.”

As scary as it may sound, the movie actually had a good, easy-to-follow plot. Granted there was quite a bit of blood and murder, but it is a horror movie.

The storyline follows the trail of Horace Pinker, a brutal murderer of families and anyone else who gets in his way. Pinker makes his fatal mistake when he murders the Parker family.

Enter Jonathon Parker, college football star. Jonathon is the only living son of the recently murdered Parker family. After a freak football accident Jonathon begins to dream about Pinker’s murder victims, beginning with his own family.

Jonathon expresses his worry about the dreams to his father, the police lieutenant, who is alive because he was on duty the night his family was killed. The hunt for Pinker begins.

After a grusome trail of blood and bodies Pinker is finally caught and sentenced to the electric chair. After all he’s been through Jonathon asks to be present at the execution. The controversy between the two men thickens.

Now I don’t want to tell you what happens, because each little episode from here on is connected with the ending. I do want to say that I think the whole team unity thing is carried a bit far in the film. Anyone who sees the movie will know what I mean.

The director of Shocker is Wes Craven, better known for his other works, “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and “The Serpent and the Rainbow.” If you study “Shocker”‘s man character Pinker, you will see his obvious similarities with Freddie Krueger. They both have the same quick wit in the face of death and cannot be fought by normal means.

I thought the film “Shocker” was excellent. OK, a few parts were corny (really corny) but no movie is perfect. “Shocker” also gives you a good scare here and there. The movie was worth every penny I paid. You have got to see it!!!
