Coors to sponsor fund

A major brewing company will sponsor a memorial scholarship fund for the children of American military veterans.

The 1990 Coors Veterans’ Memorial Scholarship Fund will award $500,000 in scholarships to a minimum of 100 sons and daughters of American veterans worldwide for the sixth consecutive year.

Applicants must be 22 years of age or younger as of March 15, 1990. They also must be full-time students in an accredited four-year college or a two-year college program which leads to a four-year undergraduate degree in the United States.

Students applying must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale. The students must be the sons or daughters of honorably discharged American veterans, active duty military, guard or reserve military (minimum six years or called to active duty) or American service person killed in action, missing in action or who has died in the line of duty.

Coors Brewing Company President Peter Coors said in a press release from the company, “through this program, we have an opportunity to salute the families of America’s heroes: its veterans.” He said it was the company’s way of thanking veterans.

The company has contributed more than $2.5 million to 638 students since the scholarship program was started in 1985. One of the winners was Lanette VanHamme, an NIU sophomore, who won a $5,000 scholorship during the summer.

Applicants can also stop by a college or university financial aid office to pick up forms. The deadline for completed applications is March 15, 1990.
