Local children to attend party

Chilling winds will blow through NIU this weekend, and spooky phantoms are planning to drift onto campus. One residence hall will be a sure target for the little DeKalb apparitions. Boy, scary stuff!

Marketing fraternity Pi Sigma Epsilon will sponsor a Halloween party for underpriviledged children from the Salvation Army from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday in the B formal lounge of Grant Towers South.

Twenty-one little ghouls and ghoulettes, age six to 10, will participate in the frightful event. The party will include pumpkin decorating, a ghost walk, musical chairs, twister and a pinata, James said.

Carolyn James, a new member of Pi Sigma Epsilon, said the event was planned by her and other new members of the organization as part of a required project.

She said the purpose of the event is to present Halloween safety information in a fun way. A DeKalb police officer will talk to the children about Halloween safety, James said.

The Salvation Army also plans to have its own party Saturday for about 50 children, said Barbara Carroll, Salvation Army activities organizer.

Halloween is not the only time of year Greek organizations hold events for underpriviledged children. Some also hold children’s parties during the Christmas holidays, Carroll said.
