NIU theatre opens season with ‘Execution of Justice’

By Gina Quilici

On November 27, 1978, Dan White, a former policeman, former fireman, former member of the Board of Supervisors of the City of San Francisco, shot and killed San Francisco Mayor George Mascone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk, a liberal, outspoken homosexual.

Many believe the murders were poilitically motivated. White was tried and convicted of voluntary manslaughter.

This light sentence gave way to serious riots in San Francisco’s homosexual community.

After his release from prision, White committed suicide.

NIU Theatre opens their season with “Execution of Justice”; a study of Dan White’s murder trial for the murders of George Mascone and Harvey Milk.

The play centers on the cost of prejudice in our society and its effect upon the justice and the judicial system.

The script is made up of trial transcripts, reportage and interviews. The performance gives the audience all of the information concerning the case and allows them to use their new knowledge and act as part of the jury.
