Student secures council support

NIU junior Jeff Monoe has secured a majority of the DeKalb City Council’s support for the 7th ward alderman position and is expected to be approved at tonight’s meeting.

Monroe, one of three candidates Mayor Greg Sparrow recommended, was said by the Student Association in its recommendation to be “unaceptable.”

Sparow also considered former NIU student Nick Valdez and NIU student Thomas Gary.

Sparrow based his recommendation on how the three candidates were ranked by the aldermen after being interviewed

If Monroe is elected by the aldermen, Sparrow said he hopes he will “bring back the integrity of that ward.”

Sparow said there has been “an abscence of leadership over the last two-and-a half years” in the 7th ward, referring to former 7th Ward Alderman Mark Powell who resigned August 10. Powell “isolated and alienated himself” from the rest of the council, Sparrow said.

Voting on Sparrow’s recommendation will be held at the beginning of the council meeting to allow the new alderman participation in the meeting.

The selected alderman will be paid a salary of $3,600.

Monroe said one of his goals is to help solve the problems student tenants have with landlords.

“The university has a legal office but I don’t tink that’s quite enough,” Monroe said.

Monroe said he does not harbor any grudges toward the SA, and does not want a “volley of tit for tat exchanges with any group. As far as I’m concerned, it’s over with,” Monroe said, referring the the lack of support he received at the time of the SA recommendation.

On possible reason why he was recommended, Monroe said, was that he made the impression he was easy to work with and reasonable.

If elected, Monroe said he would work with the SA and other campus groups to get an idea of what his constituents want.

“I’m looking to develop a good relationship with the Student Association,” Monroe said.

Monroe’s basic goal is to “represent the sudents and town residents in a manner which would satisfy them.”

Monroe has had no previous experience with municpal government but has worked on campaigns for candidates running for city government positions.
