Delta Chi petition for fraternity status accepted

Delta Chi fraternity received full recognition from NIU’s Interfraternity Council at the council’s Oct. 8 meeting.

The IFC accepted Delta Chi’s petition to change from colony status to fraternity status. The colony status had been held over from last semester because Delta Chi did not meet the 2.39 grade point average required by the IFC.

Delta Chi Vice President Brian Lund said the fraternity has 66 active members and 19 pledges. “We want to become more involved with the Greek community,” Lund said.

Chris Korfist, former president of Delta Chi, started the fraternity in fall 1987. He said the national chapter of Delta Chi contacted him and he began an interest group.

Korfist said Delta Chi was prevented from coming to NIU in the beginning because of restrictions on the growth of the Greek system.

Greek Adviser Mary Ronan said when Delta Chi first requested to come to NIU, IFC did not approve its request. Ronan said the group made a second request to be recognized as an “interest group” in January 1988. IFC accepted this request and Delta Chi was allowed to hold their first Rush on Jan. 19, 1988.

Korfist said Delta Chi was recognized by their national chapter as a “colony” in spring 1988. IFC granted Delta Chi colony status in fall 1988.
