By Mike Forassiepi

Early estimates of NIU summer enrollment reflect a slight decrease in students attending summer school.

As of Thursday, there were about 8,901 students enrolled in summer courses.

Although this number is an early estimate, it is substantially less than the 10,318 students enrolled last summer.

According to the enrollment count there are 130 freshmen, 267 sophomores, 1,029 juniors, 2,394 seniors and 3,381 graduate students living on campus.

Part-time summer school students total 3,230, and full-time students total 3,968. About 1,700 students are enrolled in off-campus university programs.

Leading the counties which have students attending NIU’s summer session are Cook with 1,384, DuPage with 546 and Kane with 304.

There are 99 students from outside of Illinois and 92 foreign students enrolled.

Commuting students number 1,170.
