Carroll Ave. closing reroutes buses

Passengers riding Huskie buses this semester will notice slight changes in the schedules of some buses, as well as the locations where buses can be boarded.

Since the closing of Carroll Avenue in the fall of 1987, all buses must drive down Lucinda Avenue and turn around in the cul-de-sac of Carroll Avenue, located between the Holmes Student Center and Neptune Residence Halls.

To alleviate overcrowding in the cul-de-sac, schedules for bus routes three and four were extended by five minutes to a 20-minute route, said Paul Johnson, general manager of the Huskie Bus Line. Other bus routes were lengthened by about a minute each.

Before the closing of Carroll Avenue, buses driving on routes three and four regularly arrived in the cul-de-sac at the same time, which caused “mass confusion,” he said.

Many of the passenger drop-off locations also changed as a result of the closing of Carroll Avenue. Johnson said the previous bus routes were more convenient because students could disembark buses in front of Gabel Hall and behind the Stevens Building. The revised routes drop students off in front of DuSable Hall and continue down Lucinda Avenue to the student center.

Johnson also said the new routes are safer for passengers. The buses previously stopped in front of Gabel Hall and students had to cross the street in order to enter DuSable Hall.

Since students now are dropped off in front of DuSable Hall, they no longer walk in front of the buses to cross the street, he said.

The Huskie Bus Line was notified of the street closing in the spring of 1987, allowing the bus line time to reroute several buses because turns could no longer be made at the southern end of Carroll Avenue.
