Two pit bull dogs might face death

Although no criminal charges have been filed against the owner of two pit bull terriers which fatally attacked an NIU student Nov. 10, one or both of the dogs might be destroyed.

Patrick Jaeger, chief of the Kane County state’s attorney’s Civil Division, said the state’s attorney will seek action against the dogs and their owner, Thomas Kennedy, 39, 33W518 Fabyan Pkwy., rural Geneva Township. “The action will be to seek to have the dogs euthanized,” he said.

The two pit bulls were involved in the attack of Kevin Cull, 25, an NIU graduate student in analytical chemistry. Cull died after the attack due to loss of blood from internal and external injuries.

A hearing to determine the fate of the dogs will be held. However, a date has not been set yet, said Lt. Fred Siezoslawski, head of investigations for the Kane County Sheriff’s Department. He said that, hopefully, a date for the hearing will be set later this week.

Siezoslawski said the investigation into the attack is “just about completed. We are tying up the loose ends.”

Although some reports of the attack said the incident involved drugs, Kane County police said drugs were not related to Cull’s death. Siezoslawski said Cull and Kennedy were friends.

The dogs are being held in an Oswego veterinary clinic. “They are currently in custody of county officials. They pose no threat to the public,” Jaeger said.
