Apartments to be built in Greek Row area

By Suzanne Tomse

Although it bears the Alpha Sigma Alpha letters, a building in the Greek Row area near Blackhawk Road and Ridge Drive is not the sorority’s new house—it is a shed storing equipment for the construction of a new apartment complex on the site.

The complex will be composed of 156 apartments, with 12 units in each of 16 buildings, said Jim Hogue, DeKalb planning and zoning administrator. He said the 16 buildings will be part of “one huge connected structure.”

Each unit in the brick buildings will include two bedrooms and two baths, said Kathy Kaisher, secretary to Herb Katz, general contractor of the complex.

Kaisher also said the area surrounding the buildings will include “plenty of parking and landscaping.”

Hogue said Blackawk Road will be extended to act as a private driveway for the complex. He said Katz has received footing and foundation permits from the city, and ground has been broken to begin construction.

Kaisher said the complex will be constructed through stages, with contractors developing two buildings at a time. She said the construction might be completed by spring, depending on weather conditions.

Costs of building have not been determined because bids are still being accepted for various parts of construction, Kaisher said. The rental costs for the apartments also have not been established.

Although the apartments are targeted toward student renters, they might appeal to faculty members and older people as well, Kaisher said.

ASA president Amy Christensen said her sorority’s members are interested in the land right next to the site of the apartment buildings to build a new house. She said the ASA letters on the shed appear to be a joke and she did not know where they came from.
