UP officer’s car collides with pedestrian

A university police officer might have had to issue himself a traffic violation ticket early Thursday morning when his squad car was involved in a collision with a pedestrian in an NIU parking lot.

Maurice Sherrill, an NIU janitor, was crossing Wirtz Drive when he collided with a police car driven by UP Sgt. Ralph Taylor at about 6:06 a.m. Sherrill was not injured seriously in the accident.

UP Capt. James Webster, who heard about the incident upon his arrival to the office Thursday, said Sherrill apparently tried to “scuttle across the street before the car.” He said the car “brushed” Sherrill and knocked him down.

A police report stated that after the collision, Sherrill walked to the University Health Service and then was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital at about 6:12 a.m.

A spokesman for Kishwaukee said Sherrill was treated and released about 7 a.m. Sherrill said he hurt his leg and elbow. He said X-rays were taken but nothing was broken. Sherrill returned to work after treatment at Kishwaukee, Webster said.

If Sherrill was involved in the collision while on duty, he would be required to file an on_the_job injury report at NIU’s insurance office for faculty and operating staff members, Webster said.

In addition, he said a state accident report will be filed by the university police.

Webster said the police car was not damaged in the incident and there will be no further investigation of the accident.
