Resume considered for business school

NIU students applying for majors within the College of Business might have to contend with more than a competetive grade point average and completion of required tool courses to be admitted.

Wayne Albrecht, College of Business assistant dean, said certain departments might start asking students for a resume stating their reasons for applying for that particular major.

“It’s really to make sure students have a specific interest in the major, and not just something they’re taking because they’re not sure what they want to do,” Albrecht said.

College of Business Dean Richard Brown said the new criteria being considered will include personal performance profile factors such as work experience, leadership and interpersonal skills and a possible interview process.

“These criteria are as equally important as a GPA when it comes to achieving success in the major and success in being hired after graduation,” Brown said.

The required GPA for fall semester 1988 admission was 2.7.

A total of about 975 applicants are accepted per academic year. Between 600 to 650 are accepted in the fall and 300 to 350 in spring, Albrecht estimated.

He said 1,100 students applied to the College of Business for this semester and about 600 were admitted.

The new criteria program has been implemented on a small scale in the fall of 1987 in NIU’s marketing department, and Brown hopes to expand the program to other departments by next year.

NIU Marketing Department Chairman Terry O’Brien said students who meet the GPA requirement are automatically admitted, and that the program used by the department was used for exceptional cases.

O’Brien said, “This gives us a chance to consider students’ abilities on other grounds.”
