Crime prevention focus of session

Methods of crime prevention for local citizens will be the subject of a training session to be held tonight.

Sponsored by Citizens Against Crime, the session will take place at 7 p.m. at the DeKalb County Public Safety Building, 150 N. Main St., Sycamore. Admission is free.

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said the program on self defense will not involve actual physical contact, but suggested methods of dealing with crimes, house protection and other various angles of prevention.

The sheriff’s department’s Radio Watch Group, which has been sponsored by the sheriff’s office for the past six years, is a volunteer citizen group in which members patrol their neighborhoods to keep them safe. The volunteers are trained in monthly sessions, featuring crime prevention and other facets of citizen safety.

Anne Hutchinson, group coordinator, said the program has received positive responses from “concerned, safety-conscious citizens.

“Many tragedies can be prevented by simply keeping informed of proper procedures,” she said.

Citizens Against Crime is an organization that gives statewide presentations to inform the public about crime safety measures.

Scott said of the program, “It is important for citizens to learn tips and take proper precautions to avoid criminal situations.”

Other topics covered in the monthly sessions include first aid, frostbite treatment and traffic direction.
