Chorus adds new members

The DeKalb Festival Chorus has added between five and 10 new members for the fall semester.

Auditions were held Saturday in room 134 of the Music Building. However, those who are interested still can join. Elwood Smith, an NIU music faculty member and director of the chorus, said, “Those who are interested are welcome to rehearse with us next week. Anyone who wants to join can contact me and we can set up a time.”

The chorus practices on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in room 171 of the Music Building.

The 50-member chorus has performed for 11 years at the university in the fall semester and at the Egyptian Theatre in the spring semester. At their spring concert, to be held April 16, the chorus will perform with the Kishwaukee Symphony in DeKalb.

The accompanist for this fall is graduate student Tong Min Qian.

The group comprises 15 sopranos, 15 altos, 10 tenors and 10 basses. Smith said, “The chorus is made up of students and faculty from areas including DeKalb, Sycamore and surrounding communities. In the past, we have had high school students in the group, but presently we don’t.”

The group’s fall concert will take place Nov. 20 at 3 p.m., and the chorus will perform two long pieces: “Miss Abrevis” by Mozart and “Myriam’s Song of Triumph” by Schubert.

Smith said, “Last year, we did ‘Requiem Setting’ by John Rutter which was very successful.”
