NIU’s Community Music School is offering lessons for voice and all instruments for both children and adults from Sept. 12 through May 6.

“Kaleidescope” is a group of classes which includes music for children, children’s chorus, children’s recorder ensemble and an adult class in piano and rock ensemble.

Paul Roloff, NIU continuing education coordinator, said, “Kaleidescope is primarily for children ages four to eight with classes in singing, listening, moving to music, playing simple instruments and creating.

“For the private lessons, the price varies from $252 and on up, and it depends on the instructor and the number of minutes the class is,” Roloff said.

The children’s group classes range from $80 to $150 in price and run for 24 sessions which start next week and end May 6. The private lessons have 28 sessions.

Open registration began Wednesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Boutell Concert Hall foyer.

Megan Donnelly of Rockford was awarded an outstanding trophy in her division for playing “Bagatelle” by Tcheretnin.

Faulds said, “The new branch of the school (of music) started a year ago.”

She teaches piano in Suzuki division of the community music school, is a 1985 NIU graduate and has a private studio in Crystal Lake.

The ages of the students range from five to 11, with the youngest being Shannon Doyle of Sycamore, one of the winning pianists.

The other winning students were Adrienne Charoeying of Crystal Lake, and Jennifer and Rachel Daley of DeKalb.

Shelby Donnelly of Rockford, Deepak Mitra of Crystal Lake, Katie Thomas of Algonquin, and Katie Wright of Lake-in-the-Hills were also winners.
