Dodge driving contest returns

Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity is hosting the Dodge National Collegiate Driving Championships on Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Campus Cinema parking lots located at Hillcrest Drive and Blackhawk Road.

Students are invited to drive a 1989 Dodge Daytona Shelby and test their driving skills on the serpentine autocross course. Safe driving skills will determine the winner and there is no charge to enter.

Students interested in participating will need a valid driver’s license and a student identification card.

Gus Holland, fundraising chairman for Pikes, said the fraternity works on a contractual basis with Dodge and will receive money for hosting the competition depending on the amount of students participating Friday. The money raised will be directed toward the fraternity’s philanthropy to help retarded children.

Pikes has hosted this competition for the past four years. “This is the first year we’re going to have it (the competition) on just a Friday rather than on a (whole) weekend,” said Holland.

Sherry Ledgerwood, a spokesperson for Dodge, said students from more than 80 major universities are expected to participate in the competition nationwide. The winner of Friday’s competition here will receive a trip to Daytona Beach, Florida during spring break to compete in the grand finals, she said.

First prize in the grand finals is a $5,000 scholarship and use of a Dodge Daytona Shelby for a year, second place is a $3,000 scholarship and use of a Daytona for a year, and third place is a $2,000 scholarship and use of a Daytona for a year.
