Citizens to discuss social problems

Concerns about crime, vandalism, safety and property values will be addressed by 3rd ward residents and city officials at a meeting Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local No. 612, 637 N. 11th St.

Neighborhood residents, city officials, DeKalb police and 3rd Ward Alderman William Hanna have been invited, said Jean Hydrick, a 3rd ward homeowner who organized the meeting.

“The meeting will be informational,” Hydrick said. “We are asking them (city officials) to clarify for us what our options are as home-owners and renters.”

Hydrick said the 3rd Ward Coalition was organized by homeowners and single women residing in the neighborhood as an attempt to address problems of excess garbage, noise, rats, violence and deteriorating property values. The group first met on Sept. 17 when about 20 residents gathered to discuss concerns.
