Bureau workers gather information for census

U.S. Census Bureau workers are currently making their way through the streets of DeKalb County to compile information for the 1990 census.

Marvin Toenjes, bureau field manager for the Northern Illinois area, said workers are collecting current mailing addresses for specified houses in the area.

“What is going on now is what is called quality control,” said Toenjes. Workers are sent out to a small number of specified houses to record the proper mailing address. This information is then used as a control against error in the next phase of census preparation, which will take place mid-October, he said.

“Starting October 18, we’ll be compiling a complete address list of all residences in the county,” said Toenjes. Census enumerators will be traveling throughout DeKalb County to prepare the lists, knocking on doors and asking for residents’ correct mailing address.

The information collected then will be entered into a master address file at the Census Bureau for use in preparing address labels for 1990 census questionnaires and to help in keeping track of questionnaires as they are processed. Toenjes said the quality control and address listing help “minimize the amount of manpower needed in 1990.” Residents can identify census employees by a red, white or blue census identification badge.

Toenjes also said the bureau was looking for people to fill paid temporary positions as enumerators for the October address listing. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years old. Interested applicants can call the bureau’s office in Rockford.
