WNIU hopes to move from Kishwaukee Hall

Although WNIU might not move to the Palmer Building, 801 N. First St., as proposed in February, the station is continuing negotiations to move its operations out of Kishwaukee Hall.

“The origianl plan appears to be dead,” WNIU General Manager Mike Lazar said. In February, WNIU was looking into the possibilty of relocating to the Palmer Building if renovation plans and cost projections for the building were approved by the NIU Foundation Board of Directors.

“It is hard to say what the future of the building will be,” Lazar said. He said the station is in the stage of “delicate negotiations,” and he is not at liberty to discuss them in detail.

“We would like to have part of our operation in DeKalb and a satellite in Rockford. However, we are not sure where in DeKalb and where in Rockford,” Lazar said.

WNIU currently occupies 2,300 of the 5,000 square feet in Kishwaukee Hall. Lazar said other university departments, such as WKDI and the art department, are interested in occupying WNIU’s space if the station moves to another location.

In February, Robert Even, chairman of the art department, said the department would be interested in using the space. The art department’s fiber/fabric program already occupies part of Kishwaukee Hall.

WKDI, which is located in 600 square feet of the hall, also is interested in the area in order to store remote equipment and albums and for extra studio space.

Lazar said negotiations will continue for the next few weeks.
