Regents to cover tuition increase

By Mike Solley

The amount of an impending tuition increase for NIU students will be discussed today at the Board of Regents regular meeting.

NIU’s tuition will be increased, NIU Student Regent Nick Valadez said. He said the amount, however, has not yet been decided. Valadez said the increase will “probably be between $75 and $200 a semester.”

NIU President John LaTourette said in June that tuition would have to be raised “at least 20 percent” to compensate for the failure of Gov. James Thompson’s proposed income tax increase. If passed, Thompson’s proposal would have brought another $217 million in revenue to higher education in Illinois.

Other budgetary matters related to the failed tax proposal will be discussed today as well. Included is recommendation from Regents Chancellor Roderick Groves calling for an average 10 percent salary increase and a 2 percent fringe benefit increase for faculty and staff at each Regent university.
