Two Kishwaukee Community College students were arrested on a burglary charge March 23 in connection with stolen tires, rims and stereo equipment from vehicles located in parking lots near NIU residence hall towers.

University Police arrested Michael Cornelious, 18, of 233 W. 10th St., Chicago, and Eduardo Anderson, 21, of 1212 Varsity Blvd., DeKalb, after seeing them drive out of one of the parking lots.

UPs said an officer stopped the vehicle driven by the suspects to inquire about the incident and discovered stereo equipment belonging to a vehicle in the vicinity. Police also confiscated various speakers and stereos that have not been identified.

A police report states a patrol car drove into the lot east of Grant Towers North and noticed a car missing all tires and rims. UP Lt. Ken Kaiser said a pressurized carbon dioxide canister located under the middle of the frame was used to prop up the vehicle. “We’re not sure where they (the canisters) came from at this point,” he said.

Other patrol cars were immediately alerted and discovered another vehicle in the same condition in parking lot P, west of the Stevenson Tower complex, Kaiser said.

Police found one vehicle in lot P with a broken window and missing stereo equipment.

Although the equipment was located and confiscated from the vehicle of the suspects, location of the tires and rims remains under investigation. The police report states further arrests also are pending.

Kaiser said the remaining stereo equipment has not been identified and no victims have reported equipment missing.

“A lot of people park their cars on Sunday and don’t drive them again until Friday,” Kaiser said. He said the police want students to be aware of the incident so they can claim their property.

Assistant State’s Attorney Duke Harris said burglary, a Class II felony, is probational up to four years and can entail three to seven years in the penitentiary. A sentence also could include a maximum $10,000 fine.

Police said a court date has not been set yet.
