Budgets for the Black Student Union, Health Enhancement Services, the Northern Illinois Malaysian Student Association, el Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Azlan (MECHA) and the Chess Club were approved by the Student Association Finance Committee at a meeting Wednesday.

The BSU, which requested $10,155.73, was given $8,112.30. The BSU’s request of $938 for wages for the editor of the newsletter, Lifeline, was zero funded. BSU President Pam Bozeman said the editor puts in a lot of time and effort and should be rewarded for it. But the committee argued it does not provide funding for newsletter editors for other organizations and an exception would not be made in this instance.

The BSU’s request for $790 for B128 Commodore computer accessories also was zero funded by the committee. Bozeman said the BSU needs a computer to keep track of all of the minority students on campus. She said some employers call the BSU and specifically ask for minority students. She said the BSU also has several groups affiliated with it and the names of chairmen need to be kept on file.

The BSU is using a computer in the Black Studies Center. But Bozeman said the computer being used has a keyboard and a terminal. “It doesn’t have a disk drive, a modem or a printer,” she said.

SA senator and committee member Dave Stern said there is no use in allotting funding for computer accessories for a computer which is almost obsolete.

The budget for Health Enhancement Services for $28,292 was passed with a rider. A request of $27,217 for wages for a health educator was approved. The funding was increased 10 percent from the amount awarded last year. The rider asked that the 10 percent increase remain identical with the campus-wide raise.

Funding of $1,000 for student health educator wages also was approved by the committee.

NIMSA requsted funding from the finance committee for the first time and received $107.40.

MECHA, a group for Latino-Americans, requested $600 but recieved $311.60.

The Chess Club received $255. They requested $361.
