Committee to discuss parking lot conversion

The Student Association Parking Committee Monday will discuss alternatives to a plan to convert student parking lot D near Neptune Hall to a faculty lot.

University Parking Committee member Shey Lowman said NIU’s parking committee discussed the proposal to convert lot D, but did not finalize plans. She said members were evenly divided on both sides of the question.

Henry Winsor, one of four university committee’s student representatives last semester, informed the SA senate of the proposal to convert lot D and other lots, said SA Parking Committee Co-chairman Dave Stern.

The proposal prompted the formation of the SA committee, which studies university parking committee structure, Stern said. The university committee will make the final recommendation to NIU administrators.

Stern said the committee will look into alternatives to the proposed conversion of lot D and other conversions of student lots to faculty lots at the SA’s meeting.

Stern said the NIU committee’s “proposals work to move student parking away from campus and all-out take it away.”

SA Parking Committee Co-chairman Paula Radtke said the conversion of lot D causes some concerns for Neptune residents. “A lot of the handicapped students on campus live in Neptune and they need the parking spaces,” she said.

Lowman also said the committee has received opposition letters from Neptune residents.

Laree Smith, a Neptune-East floor president, will present arguments against the conversion at the meeting. The conversion would be a “great inconvenience for students and a small gain to the staff,” she said.

Smith also said one of the main concerns is for handicapped students living in Neptune who need nearby parking places.

Problems with already limited loading zones in Neptune North and East will be greater if lot D is converted to a faculty lot, she said. Loading zones in Neptune West will be completely incapacitated by the conversion, Smith said.

Most Neptune residents are at least 21 years old and have a greater need for cars on campus, Smith said.

The meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m. in Holmes Student Center Rm. 306.
