SA to study univ. parking committee

A report of an NIU parking committee “proposed proposal” given by committee member Henry Windsor prompted Student Association senators Sunday to create an SA subcommittee to study the compostion of the parking committee.

enry Winsor, one of the three student members on the 12-member committee, attending the senate meeting to report on what the committee is doing to alleviate the university’s parking problems.

Windsor said the “proposed proposal” includes reallocating the existing parking lots to give faculty members access to parking spaces nearer their destinations.

The idea also might reallocate Lot O,located off Annie Glidden Road near University Apartments, to commuter students.

“Faculty and staff parking is viewed as much more important to this institution than student parking,” Windsor said.

This prompted Sen Dave Stern to inititate the creation of a committee to study the composition of the parking committee.

Stern said, “Well, I don’t like to roll over and die when we need more voice on the committee — I like my voice to be heard.”

SA Recreaton Adviser Todd Lokken said, “This is just another case where (students) are not being well represented at all.”

SA Fiance Advisor Todd Lipscomb said the proposals the parking committee makes to the administration often are ignored. He initiated the idea of creating an SA Parking committee to deal directly with the administration.

Many senators expressed concerns about the committee’s making proposals without conducting in-depth reaserach first. Sen. Dave Hochberg said, “Before making a drastic change, you have to have a poll. That’s just good common sense.”

Sen. Mike Goldstein said Winsor’s report was not very clear as to what the “proposed proposal” included, but he said it was clear there needs to be more students on the committee.

Also included in Windsor’s report of the idea were current parking statistics and proposals for creating new 1,200 parking spaces.

Windsor targeted the area south of Douglas Hall as a possible area for new parking. He said, “You’re going to see some recreation land ripped up and turned into parking lots. Where else are you going to put 700 spaces?”
