New directory targets women’s issues

More than 75 NIU faculty members, administrators and graduate students who have researched or made presentations on women’s issues are now recognized in a new directory which summarizes their work.

Sue Mellard, member of the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women, said the commission, NIU Women Studies Program and the Office of University Resources for Women all were involved in the effort to put the directory together.

Mellard said the commission received a letter from NIU President John LaTourette requesting data be gathered for the directory. He wanted it finished by March 19 in conjunction with Women’s History Month, which is celebrated throughout the country this month, she said.

LaTourette said, “A booklet of this sort will assist us in our efforts to recruit faculty and students. At the same time, it will provide evidence of the degree to which we are integrating the study of women throughout the curriculum.”

The directory groups the work in several categories, including books, monographs, articles, reviews, conference presentations, performances in the arts, dissertations and theses, Mellard said.

The topics are very diverse and range from access to nuclear technology to violence against women in film and role conflicts of women athletes to eating disorders, Mellard said.

Lois Self, Women’s Studies Program director said copies are available at Wirtz House for people who are interested in seeing them.
