Hopefuls meet file deadline

Yesterday’s filing deadline for DeKalb aldermanic hopefuls added two new candidates to the race and marked the end of Seventh Ward Alderman Jay Stein’s term in office.

The seventh ward seat is one of four which will be up for election in April. Also being decided in April will be wards one, three and five.

Stein, an NIU law student, will graduate in May. He said he will not seek re-election because he is not sure he will remain in the DeKalb area after his graduation.

Dr. Dolores Tikoo, a 15-year resident of DeKalb, filed yesterday as a candidate in Stein’s ward for the April election. Tikoo, a graduate of NIU, will run against former WLBK program director Mark Powell in the ward.

Also filing yesterday was Christine Hoagland. Hoagland, an NIU student, filed as a candidate for the first ward. She will be running against fellow student David Napoli in the ward, which includes Greek Row. Current First Ward Alderman Ron Matekaitis announced last week he will not seek re-election in the district.

In ward three, incumbent Bill Hanna will run against challenger Susannah “Sukey” Blake. Fifth Ward Alderman Bessie Chronopoulos has filed to retain her seat and is uncontested in the race.
