‘Stranger Things’ Season 3 unveils new trailer

By Parker Otto

On Wednesday, the first trailer of “Stranger Things’” third season was released. After a year and a half since the previous season, fans were beyond excited to see a glimpse of 1985 Hawkins, Indiana. This trailer did not disappoint by creating three minutes of pure heaven with a dash of cheesiness that only that 80s could offer.

The trailer immediately sucks the audience in with a mysterious, and also hilarious, opening featuring the main cast of children. The immediate attention getter is how much the kids have grown up in between seasons. The main characters in the first two seasons were definitely children, in terms of looks, but in this new season they are starting to fall into the teenage category which opens a door for new possibilities.

Another amazing reveal is that Hawkins has constructed a shopping mall. This could lead to an amazing climax with monsters much like George Romero’s 1984 film “Dawn of the Dead” which sees a group of people killing zombies in a mall and trying to survive the apocalypse. While zombies are not in this universe, anything is on the table as far as “Stranger Things” is concerned.

In March, executive producer Shawn Levy revealed several details about the third season including that it would take place in the summer of 1985, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The previous two seasons both took place in the fall tying into many 80s films including “Ghostbusters” which saw Mike, Lucas, Dustin and Will, played by Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Gatten Matarazzo and Noah Schnapp, as the ghost hunting team.

Levy also revealed that the main craze among the kids would be “Back to the Future” which was the highest grossing film of 1985. Could it be that the film will tie heavily into the series by adding time travel or could it just be another 80s property to make jokes about? Only time will tell.

The rest of the trailer is pure 80s with multiple clips featuring the aspects of summer, interactions between the child and adult cast and large monsters from the other dimension called “The Upside Down.” The song chosen for the trailer, The Who’s “Baba O’Riley” also adds both an epic tone as well as a sense of nostalgia. With the previous two seasons featuring many songs from the time period including Queen’s “Hammer to Fall,” Toto’s “Africa” and The Clash’s “Should I Stay Or Should I Go,” it’s safe to say the third season will have a strong arsenal of music.

Due to the third season being released a year and a half after the second, the trailer is a perfect way to keep the fans of the show at bay. This long wait has only fueled the “Stranger Things” fire and, if the trailer is any indication of how good the third season will be, the wait will be worth it.
