Black Mirror special provides immersive experience for viewers

Netflix has broken film boundaries with its newest original film based on the popular series “Black Mirror,” and it’s unique participatory concept has captured everyone’s attention.

“Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” was released Friday and featured an interactive storyline which allows viewers to decide what the main character, Stefan Butler’s next choice in the plot will be, ranging from a simple breakfast selection to life and death decisions.

Butler, played by Fionn Whitehead, is a young video game designer and has recently pitched a groundbreaking game concept based on a popular novel called Bandersnatch, which will allow players to decide the character’s fate with multiple choices over the course of the game. The film works in the same way as the game, presenting two choices at the bottom of the screen which can be clicked in a small time frame before a decision is made on its own.

The film then plays out the selected choice and leads to a path which Butler follows, either to one of many alternate endings or back to the beginning if a “wrong” choice is made. Within the film are many clues that direct the audience to each choice, however, some clues are misleading and may still lead to an unfinished ending and frustratingly being the viewer back to the beginning to “try again.”

“Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” seamlessly integrates each choice into the plotline of the film and guides the audience down an apparently endless rabbit hole where a multitude of endings await to be discovered. One minute, the viewer is following a path that seems on the right track, but one choice can determine whether that path remains or breaks off into several new options.

The television series which inspired the film is well-known for its bizarre and disturbing episodes, which in many ways resemble modern renditions of chapters from the 1960s series “The Twilight Zone,” with astonishing twists at the end of each episode.

The “Bandersnatch” special retains the peculiar qualities of all the past episodes of “Black Mirror,” which have captured the attention of many throughout its four seasons. It is a demonstration of brilliant captivation of its audience and gives viewers an enthralling sense of bafflement as they watch the story unfold in so many ways.
