“Polka King” streams laughs to viewers

“The Polka King,” a Netflix original, toggles between comedy and drama with compelling characters and a narratively-driven plot, all while following a true story.

Jan Lewan, a Polka singer played by Jack Black, is constantly trying to grow his business and singing career by taking money from fans without legal consent. Stealing from his investors who become impatient, Lewan soon has to pay up for the crimes he’s committed.

Black’s talent really shines through in this film with his amazing comedic timing and facial expressions. Though he has a stereotypical and slightly offensive Polish accent, he gives the character more depth than the standard comedic role. Black knows how to create drama through the wide range of emotions he displays from crying to red-hot anger, making him a relatable character to follow.

The atmosphere of the film takes viewers back to the ’90s with spectacular costumes and fascinating hairstyles. The props and set of the film don’t require a second thought as viewers submerge themselves in Lewan’s world.

Jason Schwartzman, who plays Mickey Pizzaz, the musically talented buddy of Lewan, plays a fantastic supporting role with his laid back facade. Schwartzman adds more laughs to the story while also being a confidante for Lewan, despite his shortcomings. Black and Schwartzman play off each other magnificently with their tough love and heart-to-hearts, which contradict seamlessly throughout the film.

With incredible acting and a true yet compelling plot, “The Polka King” is bound to interest it’s Netflix audience. It is a creative and unusual story that will leave viewers interested in the real life of Jan Lewan.
