“Going Greek” is a big deal on campus and it’s important to understand what it involves. Everyone has their own opinion about Greeks and often times people think only of the stereotypical things. It’s time to debunk the misconceptions and even the mysteries of “Going Greek.”

1. Party, party, party

Many people think Greek life is just about the parties; however, there are different types of fraternities and sororities. In fact, there are many types such as social, service, professional, honors and religious fraternities or sororities.

2. You pay for your friends

While you will have to pay dues if you join a sorority or fraternity, these dues go towards things like keeping the house up to shape and chapter responsibilities. The money is also used for different activities throughout the year. Though you aren’t paying for friends, you will have an opportunity to connect with like minded individuals like yourself.

3. It’s a waste of time/ I don’t have time for it

Employers will be looking for resumes which include more than just attending class. So, joining a service or professional fraternity/sorority is a great way to expand your resume with leadership skills. Often times, this can lead to many opportunities because of the networks you are connected to.

4. Events are exclusive

Yes, some events are just for members of a certain fraternity/ sorority but typically most events are welcoming to anyone. A huge proponent to Greek life is being apart of something bigger than yourself while building a community that can last a lifetime.
