Grammys incite competition

The 59th Annual Grammy Awards will take place on Feb. 26 and music lovers nationwide are on the edge of their seats to see who will win which titles. The nominees for the awards were released Dec. 6 and included artists such as Beyoncé, Adele, and Kanye West. However, one of the most coveted categories of the night is the Grammy for Best New Artist. This year, the competition is fierce with artists such as Chicago native, Chance the Rapper, who is nominated for the award of Best New Artist as well as six others including Best Rap Performance and Best Rap album. Here are some of the musicians nominated for Best New Artist.

Kelsea Ballerini

Country singer Kelsea Ballerini hit the music scene in 2014 and has since released songs such as “Love Me Like You Mean It.” This song debuted at No. 5, according to the Billboard U.S. Country charts. She has successfully acquired platinum status by selling over 596,000 copies in the U.S. Ballerini also sings the popular song, “Peter Pan.” This is her most recent track, and it debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Country charts and has pushed out over 600,000 copies in the U.S., according to Billboard. With sales like these, it’s no wonder Ballerini is a contender. She will be playing on tour with Thomas Rhett on March 3 performing at the Convocation Center.

The Chainsmokers

The DJ duo, The Chainsmokers, were formed as an electronic dance music group in 2012. The group has grown in popularity since the release of their first single in 2014, “#Selfie,” which reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, according to Billboard. The group has secured their first number one single with “Closer,” which was released last summer. The Chainsmokers appear hopeful for the Best New Artist award as they tweeted, “We are so honored and so grateful that we can’t believe it.” The Chainsmokers will be performing in the area at 7 p.m. on April 29 in Rosemont, Illinois at the Allstate Arena.

Chance the Rapper

Everyone enjoys a good Cinderella story, and in this case, Chance the Rapper is befitting of the comparison. Chance grew up on the south side of Chicago, later releasing a free album titled “Coloring Book.” He has become a catalyst for the Grammys as his album, “Coloring Book,” is the first streamed album to be considered for recognition. Chance represents the hope of young aspiring musicians everywhere. He began circulating buzz with the release of his 2013 mixtape, “Acid Rap.” He released “Coloring Book” May 13, which reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 200 charts, according to Billboard. “Coloring Book” is the first streaming-only album to receive a Grammy nomination. A win for Chance would not only be a win for him but a win for a liberating musical movement.
