After a heated discussion among both the City Council and those in attendance, the council voted to move the University Village rezoning project forward Monday.

The ordinance will rezone University Village, 722 N. Annie Glidden Road, to ensure funding from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Illinois Housing Development Authority. University Village’s current zoning will now be permitted to rebuild to its current state if 50 percent of the property were destroyed in a catastrophic event.

DeKalb Mayor John Rey voted yes to pass the ordinance with a 5-3 vote Monday. Second ward Alderperson Bill Finucane, 5th ward Alderperson Kate Noreiko, 3rd ward Alderperson Michael Marquardt and 7th ward Alderperson Monica O’Leary voted for the proposal, while 4th ward Alderperson Bob Snow, 6th ward Alderperson Dave Baker and 1st ward Alderperson David Jacobson voted against it.
