All Time Low grows up in ‘Future Hearts’

By Alexis Malapitan

American pop-punk band All Time Low’s sixth studio album, “Future Hearts,” illustrates their musical maturity.

As the title suggests, “Future Hearts” compares the past and future — “us” versus “them” — a fresh idea for the band. All Time Low continues to have a passionate, guitar-driven sound and the enthusiasm in its singers’ voices grows with each song.

The passion in the lead singer Alex Gaskarth’s voice is apparent in each song, especially in the hit single, “Something’s Gotta Give.” The song talks about a person itching to live his or her life after being stuck in the same place for so long, dealing with the same old people and things. Gaskarth sings this song with great intensity, especially in the chorus: “Oh, wake me up. Say enough is enough. I’m dying to live. Something’s gotta give.”

All Time Low is able to develop a story with each song on “Future Hearts,” making it enjoyable and easy for the listener to follow the band’s journey through the album.

“Kids in the Dark” is another one of my favorite tracks. It is beautifully written and symbolizes the coming together of teenagers and young adults who are dealing with struggles in life. This track teaches people they shouldn’t forget to let loose and have fun regardless of what they’re going through.

“Satellite,” makes for a pleasantly surprising starter. Similar to Green Day’s “American Idiot.” “Satellite” has a rebellious feel and is accompanied with an earful of drums.

“Future Hearts” has that toe-tapping, head-banging quality you can’t get away from, making for a catchy album. The powerful guitars and synth blend well and contribute to its “futuristic” sound.

While I did like All Time Low’s previous albums, “Future Hearts” stands out the most to me because of its stability. The album’s ability to form relatable stories through music and lyrics shows how much the musicians are confident and ready with their music.
