Food Network show tests kids’ dedication to baking

By Alexis Malapitan

Passion is a key ingredient in Food Network’s upcoming series, Kids Baking Championship, which premieres 7 p.m. today.

Contestants ages 10-13 will take on challenges that test their creativity, intelligence and baking skills to win the judges over. Because of the wide variety of young kids and teenagers competing, I think this fresh, new series will draw in people of all ages as viewers get to see how each creates their own versions of popular pastries.

Hosts and judges Duff Goldman and Valerie Bertinelli will point the aspiring bakers in the right direction as the eight contestants serve up delicious, mouthwatering treats including creative cakes, cookies and other pastries.

This series is about much more than sweets and treats. A prize package, which includes Food Network bakewear, a profile in Food Network’s magazine, an original cake featured in Charm City Cakes and a $10,000 grand prize, is at stake.

For the first challenge, the eight eager aspiring bakers will work tirelessly to whip up two delicious signature items for a bake sale. Judges Goldman and Bertinelli will reveal a third must-use item, which is a traditional childhood favorite ingredient, midway through the show. Two bakers will then be sent home in a double elimination.

Kids Baking Championship looks like an interesting, enjoyable show for anyone to watch. Each one of the contestants clearly has his or her own way of showcasing passion for baking at a young age. I’m excited to see the mouthwatering pastries each one of them will prepare in hopes to get the gold.

One thing I found fascinating about this upcoming show was the undying love each of the contestants had for baking. Their passion shines through in the trailers and you can see their faces light up with joy as they speak. This breaks the stereotype that a kid doesn’t know what they want to be until they reach their teen years. I also like the backstories each kid has when describing how their passion for baking came about.

One contestant in particular, 13-year-old Caroline Binkley began baking at a young age as a way to express herself, according to Food Network’s official website. Recently, Binkley has been baking daily and often sells her treats at local farm markets and fundraising events.

Hollis Johnson, who turned 13 in November, developed her passion for baking at home. Her family travels the world and Johnson uses the trips as a way to expand her knowledge of food.

Kids Baking Championship will live up to the hype because of the dedication each of these contestants have. I think we’ll get to learn more about the kids and who they are as bakers. We’ll get to see their strengths, weaknesses and what makes them crack under pressure.

Catch this brand new series filled with cuteness, sweetness and fun tonight and see what luscious treats catch your eye.
