‘Hocus Pocus’ should zap back into movie theatres

By Lauren Iverson

Halloween movies can be frightening anywhere, but the best place to experience them is in a dark theater with loud speakers and a massive screen.

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” is returning to select theaters Friday and so should these classics.

“Hocus Pocus”

This movie is the ultimate Halloween classic and is equal parts scary and funny. The film is aimed toward children and brings back great memories.

While “Hocus Pocus” does make a comeback via television every October, the quality and atmosphere of a movie theater would make the film even more exciting.

“Halloweentown”

Though it was never in theaters, the Disney Channel Original Movies “Halloweentown” should be shown on the big screen.

The film, which is kid-friendly but with the perfect amount of scariness, is one that stays in your heart. With easily lovable characters and weird situations, kids can relate to these films.

The Disney channel plays this movie every Halloween along with its sequels, but I would definitely go out of my way to see this childhood classic in theaters.

“A Nightmare on Elm Street”

The thought of the serial killer, Freddy Krueger, still makes me sleep with the lights on.

While its gory scenes are dated and unrealistic, “A Nightmare on Elm Street” still shocks me as much as it did the first time it was in theaters. When I think of Halloween, this scary movie always comes to mind.

Although a remake came out in 2010, the original film should definitely come back to theaters.

“Beetlejuice”

You may not want to say his name three times, but “Beetlejuice” deserves a shot at being brought back to the big screen.

Though this film is more of a comedy, it has elements that can frighten younger viewers. With an all-star cast of Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, this film is one of the best products of Tim Burton’s creative and crazy mind. This film was made in 1988 so the special effects are a little cheesy, but that does not take away from its undeniable humor and creativity.
