Pass: Company speaks on reviewing hires

Members of Baxter International Inc. presented information on how they hire candidates at one of my operation management and informations systems classes last week.

After the presentation, there was an informal Q&A where students spoke with the company’s employees. These type of meetings are important to students because the employees show students the types of resumes that stand out.

During the presentation, Baxter International Inc. representatives spoke about the company’s interests, what opportunities it has for students, how human resource departments review resumes and the importance of networking.

These kind of informal discussions make students more comfortable with the hiring process and with employers.

Fail: Visas stop some from getting jobs

Wednesday was the Full-Time Job Fair, but some students didn’t find it worth attending.

While international students can work part-time jobs under certain restrictions, those with F-1 Student Visas can’t get off-campus internships or jobs before completing one academic year of school, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website.

International students need to tell company representatives when they will be available for internships and when they can work full-time. A few recruiters aren’t aware of these subtleties and tell international students they won’t be able to work for the company, even though they’re eligible under Curricular Practical Training and Optional Practical Training.

Companies should inform their representatives before sending them to job fairs so that they know about the status of international students.
