Plans for a DeKalb Eggsclusive Cafe aren’t all they were cracked up to be.

Mike Carpenter, the realtor behind a proposed DeKalb Eggsclusive Cafe, said the breakfast restaurant no longer plans to move into a space at 2211 Sycamore Road.

Eggsclusive Cafe owner Alex Henigan said he still plans to open a DeKalb location at an unknown time in the future, but not at the proposed site.

“We are looking for a different location. We own the other two locations, and rather than renting we would like to keep looking for a property to own,” Henigan said. “With the high rental rates, the risk just outweighed the rewards for us.”

The business would have been in the newly developed Brookview Center.

Despite the changed plans for DeKalb, Henigan opened a second restaurant Monday at 7105 Cherryvale N. Blvd. in Cherry Valley. Henigan opened his first Eggsclusive Cafe, 265 W. Peace Road in Sycamore, in August 2008.

“They are doing another restaurant at the moment, and it was simply too much, too soon,” Carpenter said.

Henigan opened the original Eggsclusive Cafe with brothers Peter and Dennes Spyratos.

Corey Caldwell, of DeKalb, said he is familiar with the restaurant.

“I like Eggsclusive. They serve huge portions of food. It’s reasonably priced compared to other restaurant places that charge the same amount for smaller portions. I always leave with a to-go box. Always,” Caldwell said.
