Fraternity gives away free hugs to all

Service fraternity members from Alpha Phi Omega gave out hugs to passersby Monday to commemorate the organization’s national service week.

Alpha Phi Omega is a national co-ed service fraternity that dedicates one week out of the year to community service. The theme this year for service week is Respect for Self.

“My favorite part about [giving free hugs] is just the happiness it could bring, even if you’re having a bad day,” said Carolyn Butvilas, junior media studies major. “Maybe it could even brighten up your day.”

Butvilas said Alpha Phi Omega is a good organization to join and has a diverse membership.

“I like all of the service events, helping people out and getting involved on campus,” said sophomore chemistry major Shannon Simpson.

Alpha Phi Omega’s chapter at NIU has been around since 1928.

“I love giving back and I love helping people,” said fraternity member Marc Wiktor, sophomore mechanical engineering major. “I love seeing people smile, and seeing people in need being helped.”

At the fraternity’s next event, held Thursday, Alpha Phi Omega members will pick up trash around campus and separate it into recyclables and non-recyclables.
